More info:
Lisbon is the capital of Portugal and lies on the north bank of the Tagus Estuary, on the European Atlantic coast. It is the westernmost city in continental Europe. Greater Lisbon has an area of approximately 1,000 km2. The city lies more or less in the center of the country, approximately 300 km from the Algarve in the south and 400 km from the northern border with Spain.

It offers a wide variety of options to the visitor, including beaches, countryside, mountains and areas of historical interest only a few kilometers away from the city center. Due to the influence of the Atlantic Ocean, Lisbon has a pleasant climate throughout the year. The agreeable temperatures in the summer months are an open invitation for a walk by the river, or to spend an afternoon in one of the many street cafés to be found all over the city. Although the temperatures may fall somewhat in the autumn and winter months, sunshine is almost always a constant feature.

Legend has it that Ulysses founded Lisbon. The name comes from "Olissipo", which has its origins in the Phoenician words "Allis Ubbo", meaning "enchanting port". Most likely it was founded by the Phoenicians and styled by the Moores which shows in the strong Arabic influences. The Moors after all, ruled it for 450 years. In the 12th century the Christians re conquered the city but it was not until the mid 13th century that Lisbon became the country's capital.

The historical neighborhoods of central Lisbon are perfect for visitors to the Portuguese capital to experience for themselves. Their culture, the history, the architecture and the people are fundamental aspects of Lisbon's identity, and those who explore them will discover their own personal map. There are so many possibilities, don't let them get away!
